Image Optimizer Plus for Windows

Contents

On my Mac I’ve been using ImageOptim for years. Drop some images onto it, wait a second, and they’re smaller. No settings to fiddle with and no worrying about whether the images still look the same. On Windows I never found anything quite as simple, so I made one: Image Optimizer Plus.

Drop AVIF, GIF, JPEG, JPEG XL, PNG, SVG and WebP files (or whole folders) onto the window and each file is optimized and replaced in place. You can also right-click images or folders in File Explorer and choose Optimize with Image Optimizer.

Lossless and safe

The most important thing for me was that it should never make an image worse. Each image is optimized on a copy in a temporary folder, and a result is only kept if it’s strictly smaller and pixel-identical to the original (for GIFs every frame is checked, along with its timing and loop count). If the file changed on disk in the meantime, or anything goes wrong, the original is left exactly as it was.

Metadata such as EXIF, comments and camera info is removed by default, but color profiles and JPEG orientation are always kept so images look exactly the same.

Features

  • Seven formats: AVIF, GIF, JPEG, JPEG XL, PNG, SVG and WebP.
  • Uses the best open source tools under the hood: oxipng, libjpeg-turbo, Gifsicle, libwebp, libavif, libjxl and SVGO (SVGO runs in a built-in JavaScript engine, so no Node.js is needed).
  • File Explorer integration. Selecting many files at once opens them all in one window.
  • Nothing to configure. The defaults are safe, and a small Settings panel is there if you want it (including a much slower maximum compression mode).
  • Keeps each file’s original “Date modified” by default.
  • Follows the Windows light or dark mode automatically, and uses your High Contrast colors when a contrast theme is on.
  • Available in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish.

Image Optimizer Plus is free and open source (MIT License) with no adverts or tracking. It requires Windows 10 (version 2004 or later) or Windows 11, and is available from the Microsoft Store, which keeps it up to date.

There’s more about it on the Image Optimizer website, and the source code is on GitHub at coliff/image-optimizer-app. Happy to hear any feedback, suggestions or feature requests (Mastodon and Bluesky links below, or open an issue).
